Techniques

I originally trained in Counselling Psychology in 1998-2000 during which time I specialised in CBT, subsequently I have continued my professional development with many short and longer courses to enhance my skills. I also possess a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy and EMDR practitioners Training. The techniques I generally employ are;

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

CBT is the most recognised form of therapy and is based on working through;

  • How you think about yourself, the world and other people
  • How what you do affects your thoughts and feelings

CBT can help you to change how you think ("Cognitive") and what you do ("Behaviour)". These changes can help you to feel better. Unlike some of the other talking treatments, it focuses on the "here and now" problems and difficulties.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy involves leading clients into an altered state of consciousness, in which it is possible to work with their unconscious mind in altering negative beliefs, removing negative symptoms and encouraging positive behaviours.

Hypnotherapy is often applied in order to modify a subject's behavior, emotional content, and attitudes, as well as a wide range of conditions including dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development.

EMDR

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. It uses a structured approach to address past, present, and future aspects of disturbing memories. The approach was developed to resolve the development of trauma-related disorders as resulting from exposure to a traumatic or distressing event, such as rape or military combat.

This approach has been recommended by Nice as the 1st line treatment for Trauma- but has also been found to be effective in treating a whole range of issues.

EFT

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is basically a needle free form of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body's subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. EFT has been reported successful in thousands of cases covering a huge range of emotional, health and performance issues. It often works where nothing else will.

Having a range of techniques at my disposal allows me to tackle many varying issues, ensuring that I am always using the most appropriate treatment for the specific case.

Overcoming Trauma

Trauma can affect people in different ways and to different degrees. Whether you were involved in, or witness to a traumatic incident, or even a professional or service person trained to operate in such situations, you may be struggling to cope with memories or flashbacks, loss of sleep, feelings of guilt, anxiety or depression. This will impact on the quality of your life.

Eliminating Phobias

Phobias are very common - up to 1 in 10 of us will be affected by a phobia at some point in our lives - and they can take many forms. Some of the most common are:

  • Fear of Heights
  • Claustrophobia (enclosed spaces)
  • Agoraphobia (open spaces, or often fear of panic attacks)

Overcoming anxiety and panic

Anxiety and panic are part of the body's natural response to danger - also known as the 'fight or flight' response. We can all experience some degree of anxiety at the thought of a future event or when faced with upsetting or stressful situations. However, when a person becomes oversensitive to everyday occurrences, it can seriously impair the quality of their life.

Fertility Treatment

Whilst IVF has an average success rate of 10-15% for clients with no specific problem, hypnosis alone has been found to have a success rate of 35-45%. This is likely to be because it deals directly with unconscious psychological issues that may be preventing pregnancy or carrying to term, and allows the brain to work with the body to enable a successful pregnancy.

Unwanted habits or behaviours

Many unwanted habits or behaviours are so hard to stop because they happen without our conscious awareness. Hypnotherapy and counseling can effectively eliminate many habits, including:
